The Christmas social media gadget wish list
For those on the go, communicating over the web would be a chore if it wasn’t for the latest enabling technologies making the next tweet that little bit easier. For the tech- hungry among us, here’s our top five Christmas gadgets set to make your social media efforts quicker, easier and much more enjoyable this festive season.
#1 Apple’s iPhone 4
Everybody wants one, many people have one and it gets better the more you use one. Apple’s latest instalment in the mobile communications line up is better than ever and allows more people to converse digitally. Given the nature of Apple announcements, there’s a rumour that we could be due for a white iPhone any day now. When it comes, add the word ‘white’ to the top spot!
#2 Apple’s iPad
The ultimate in simple-to-use, enabling technology is at number two. Due to its bigger frame, it’s not for everyone – you’re less likely to tweet standing up on a crowded train from an iPad than a smaller device – but it’s fantastic nonetheless. It may seem like we’re being paid by Apple for this post, but number three proves we’re not!
#3 Acer’s Iconica
The only realistic answer to the iPad in the tablet market, Acer’s latest dual screen piece of technological candy. I’ve heard the adage that two screens are better than one, and the practical implications of having this much screen real estate on the go is huge. The only thing that stops this gadget from (controversially) rising to the number two slot is its operating platform – Windows 7. Acer’s oversight in not deploying an alternative, touch friendly, OS such as Google Android could hamper the application of this little device. The Iconica is due for release in December, just in time for Christmas.
#4 Flip’s new Mino HD
Video bloggers, hyper-local activists and impromptu film makers will enjoy using the newly-designed flip Mino HD pocket camcorder. Although this particular release doesn’t appear to have any major improvements in terms of specification, the new look will please the fashion-conscious filmer, and the ease with which users can upload content to YouTube and various other micro blogging platforms will keep the staple flip fans content!
#5 Path
Although technically not a ‘real’ piece of technology, we felt this latest platform from a team of crack American social media developers was worthy of a mention. Described as an ‘anti-social media’ platform, path limits your network to 50 contacts and currently only allows communication via image. It’s all based on a rather complex bit of theory known as Dunbar’s Number, which states that 150 is the maximum number of social relationships a human can handle. Will it change the way we communicate online over the next 12 months? Who knows, but if it has anything like the same success as the platforms listed on the developer’s CVs (Facebook, Google and Napster, to name a few), it will be a coup. We’ll be watching Path closely this Christmas.
